THE LORE OF TENIENTE GIMO LIVES ON... IN KID’S LITERATURE!?
MANILA — As twilight casts long shadows across the Philippines, the mystical world of aswangs comes alive in children’s imaginations. The age-old tales of these legendary creatures are being reimagined most unexpectedly - through a middle-grade novel. In a literary twist, author Andrew Jalbuena Pasaporte brings the lore of Teniente Gimo to young readers, preserving Filipino folklore while creating a captivating story fit for all ages.
Tales of Aswangs in the Philippines
Aswangs, mythical creatures deeply entrenched in Filipino folklore, have long been the subjects of spine-tingling stories shared across generations. These shape-shifting monsters are known for their nocturnal prowling and insatiable appetite for human flesh. Yet, the mythos is not all darkness; it is a testament to the richness of Philippine culture and its unique storytelling traditions. Teniente Gimo... Who? Teniente Gimo is a name whispered in fearful hushes across the archipelago. A figure deeply associated with the lore of aswangs, Teniente Gimo has been a character of fascination and dread. While the tales of Teniente Gimo have been handed down from generation to generation, his story is now being revisited and reimagined in a way that may surprise you.
Diversity in Kid’s Literature
Children’s literature often transcends boundaries, both in terms of age and cultural diversity. Yet, the question lingers: Are some stories too scary for young readers? Andrew Jalbuena Pasaporte challenges this notion with his middle-grade novel, “Gimo Jr. and the Aswang Clan.” He believes children can explore the eerie and mysterious while embracing their heritage. While inspired by the aswang myth, this tale is not intended to terrify but to spark the imagination.
Collaborative Work: Pasaporte x AVGSS

Auggie Fontanilla, a contemporary artist known for his dynamic fusion of street art and Filipino religious iconography, was the perfect creative collaborator for “Gimo Jr. and the Aswang Clan.” Drawing from influences that include roots in graffiti and sticker-slapping subcultures, as well as inspiration from tattoo culture, Americana aesthetics, and the enigmatic world of gang and prison symbolism, Fontanilla’s artistry breathes life into the book.
