Cebu City collects 67K kilos of garbage in coastal cleanup

MORE than 60,000 kilograms of garbage were collected in Cebu City during the city’s fifth coastal clean-up drive on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021.

City officials and volunteers conducted the clean-up drive in 21 major riverside and coastal communities in Cebu City.

Reymar Hijara, subcommittee chairperson for the Cebu City Coastal Management Task Force (CMTF), told reporters that around 67,940 kgs of garbage were collected during the wholeday activity.

Of the 67,940 kgs of garbage collected, 27,150 kgs were collected from the city’s South District barangays and 36,490 kgs were from the North District barangays.

Personnel from the city’s Department of Public Services (DPS) collected 4,300 kgs from their own collection operations.

Around 3,800 volunteers from 80 barangays, private companies, civic groups, national government agencies and city government employees participated in the clean-up drive.

Hijara said 50 percent of the garbage they collected was composed of wood, plants and mud, while 40 percent of it was plastic and 10 percent was residual wastes.

Hijara said most of the heavy equipment was deployed in Barangays Tejero and Carreta for the dredging of its creeks.
