PETRA Cement-Roxas have pulled away late to trounce the Alza Alayon, 79-72, in the 2021 Chooks-toGo Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup, Friday, July 23, 2021, at the Pagadian City Gymnasium in Zamboanga del Sur.

Down by two in the fourth, the Vanguards suddenly came alive and uncorked an 11-0 run to put them up, 77-68, with just 1:25 left in the game. Zamboanga del Sur’s John Jabello then made consecutive layups to slice Roxas’ lead to just five, 7277, with 31 ticks left.

But it was a case of too little, too late as James Castro calmly sank two free throws to ice the win.

Ernesto Bondoc made history for Roxas, tallying a VisMin record of 23 rebounds, to go with 15 points, four assists and two steals.

The former rebounding record was held by Tabogon’s Arvie Bringas with 21 during the Visayas Leg.

Also having a double-double was James Castro with 22 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. Lester Reyes also pumped in 12 points, six in the payoff period.

After losing their first two games, the Vanguards rolled to their third-straight victory, now at 3-2, still at fifth place but just half a game behind JPS.

Dennis Daa paced ALZA Alayon with 16 points and 15 rebounds while Eloy Poligrates had 15 points, five rebounds and four steals.

Dan Sara was the missing link with just five points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field. He dished out nine assists.

Zamboanga del Sur dropped to 2-4 for the seventh spot.
