Karzai secures second term

President Hamid Karzai effectively secured a second term on Sunday when his only challenger dropped out of the race.

The Obama administration said it was prepared to work with the man it has previously criticized to combat corruption and confront the Taliban insurgency.

President Barack Obama has been waiting for a new government in Kabul to announce whether he will send tens of thousands of new troops to Afghanistan, where the war has intensified.

Malaysian premier resigns

Malaysia's prime minister submitted his resignation yesterday to the country's constitutional monarch before handing power to his deputy following five years of largely ineffectual rule.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi visited the palace for about 30 minutes, said a senior official who did not want to be named because the official statement had not yet been released.

Confirmation "He has informed the king of his intention to resign," said the official, adding that the monarch will formally confirm the resignation later in the day.

Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak will be sworn in as the new prime minister today in a carefully planned power transition that has been one year in the making.
